The Medical Center (Columbus) Program

The Family Medicine Residency Program at Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown Campus in Columbus is a fully accredited, three-year program that was established in 1972, making it the first of its kind in Georgia and one of the first in the Southeastern United States. The program emphasizes the development of clinical responsibility within a strong academic setting. More than 1,000 family physicians have graduated from this nationally recognized program.

Residents at Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown Campus receive support from all major medical specialties, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience. The program offers core clinical rotations in areas such as Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, and more. These rotations, along with a variety of electives, aim to provide residents with the training necessary for different practice settings and board certification by the American Board of Family Medicine and/or the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians.

The Family Medicine Residency Program at Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown Campus has a competitive stipend along with benefits that include paid time off, medical and dental insurance coverage, and more. The program is certified through 2019 by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medicinal Education (ACGME).

Applicants to the program should have strong scores on Step 1 and Step 2 of the USMLE. Successful applicants are not selected based on cutoff scores alone but also on personal statements, life experiences, and interview skills. For international medical graduates, having at least one year of clinical experience in the American healthcare system is recommended to be competitive. Most successful international medical graduates graduated from medical schools within the past five years.

The residency program is dually accredited by the ACGME and the AOA. Residents are prepared for successful board exam completion through various mechanisms, including board review activities and individualized education plans guided by their Faculty Advisor.
