The Montgomery Family Medicine Residency Program is a community-based, stand-alone residency hosted by Baptist Health, the largest employer in the River Region. The program is designed for those who value a supportive community and teamwork in their training. Each academic year, the program accepts eight residents, emphasizing a tailored educational experience that encompasses all aspects of family medicine, catering to patients from newborns to geriatrics.

The program is noted for its impressive achievements, including a consistent 100% first-time board pass rate for the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), a testament to its commitment to excellence in medical education and patient care. Montgomery Family Medicine Residency Program integrates a robust curriculum that prepares residents comprehensively across both inpatient and outpatient care settings.

Curriculum Overview

The residency curriculum features a continuum of care and diverse clinical experiences. It is divided into 13 blocks, each lasting between two to four weeks, creating a total of 39 rotations throughout the residency. This unique structure allows flexibility, with all rotations beginning on a Monday. The first year includes a foundational block focused on Family Medicine Practice and Principles (FMPP), which is crucial for new residents to develop their skills in a supportive environment.

Early every morning, residents participate in 30-minute sessions led by faculty or upper-level residents, focusing on common inpatient medical problems. Conferences are held daily at noon, covering diverse specialties and essential topics in family medicine, for which residents receive lunch.

Eligibility and Application Requirements

To apply, candidates must possess a medical degree from an accredited institution recognized by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners and ideally graduate within three years prior to application. Candidates eligible for an interview must demonstrate the ability to start residency by the specified orientation date and provide proof of successful completion of USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Level 1 within five years before applying. Although not a strict requirement, US Clinical Experience is highly preferred. The program accepts applicants holding a J-1 visa sponsored by ECFMG; however, it does not sponsor other visa types.
