Overview

In 2023, Cahaba Medical Care received funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) through the Rural Residency Planning and Development (RRPD) Program to create a novel psychiatric training pathway focused on rural Alabama communities.

This initiative builds on Cahaba Medical Care’s prior work developing Rural Family Medicine residency programs and expands into psychiatric education under the leadership of Dr. John B. Waits and Dr. Lacy Smith. In the same year, Cahaba welcomed its first full‑time psychiatrist, Dr. Boone G. Rountree. In 2025, the Cahaba Medical Care + UAB Rural Psychiatry Program achieved initial accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), reflecting compliance with national standards for psychiatric residency training.

Mission and Scope

The program’s goals are to deliver high‑quality psychiatric care and to train physicians to practice effectively in underserved rural settings across Alabama. The curriculum and clinical experiences are tailored to the needs of communities that have historically lacked sufficient mental health resources.
