The University of Alabama Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency Program boasts a long history of commitment to improving the health of individuals and communities across Alabama and the Southeast region. This three-year residency program, initiated nearly five decades ago, has successfully trained nearly 600 physicians, with a significant portion of its graduates practicing in the Southeast. The program is strategically positioned to address not only the primary care physician workforce needs in Alabama but also nationwide, highlighting the correlation between increased primary care and improved healthcare access and population health outcomes.

Residents participating in the program benefit from an enriching academic atmosphere that fosters learning from seasoned family medicine physician role models. This hands-on education emphasizes compassionate, patient-centered care and allows residents to engage with patients within their families and communities through a diverse array of clinical settings. Additionally, the residency offers fellowship opportunities in specialized areas such as behavioral health, emergency medicine, geriatrics, hospital medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, rural public psychiatry, and sports medicine.

Program Curriculum

The curriculum at the University of Alabama Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency Program is comprehensive, encompassing a wide range of medical disciplines including cardiology, pediatric care, surgery, and psychiatry among others. Residents acquire crucial competencies in managing biological and psychosocial care for patients across all age groups.

Inpatient and Outpatient Experience

The residency includes a strong inpatient component, with opportunities to oversee and manage patient care at the DCH Regional Medical Center, a facility displaying a wide range of specialized medical services. Residents regularly engage in acute and chronic health management and are assigned their own patient panels, which increase in size as they progress through the residency.

Didactic Learning

Didactic sessions are held weekly, permitting residents to participate in lectures and workshops that cover various health topics. Other educational avenues, including journal clubs and online courses, supplement the core curriculum.

Fellowship Opportunities

Post-residency fellowship options encompass specialties such as behavioral health, emergency medicine, geriatrics, and sports medicine, preparing graduates for leadership roles in these fields. The fellowship programs provide intensive training and are structured to enhance both clinical skills and academic proficiency.

Application Requirements

Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria: graduates of LCME-accredited or AOA-accredited medical schools from the U.S. or Canada are eligible, as are international medical graduates holding ECFMG certification. Notably, applicants have a maximum of ten attempts allowed for USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3 combined to maintain eligibility.

Visa Support and Competitiveness

The program offers sponsorship for J-1 Physician Visas, welcoming international medical graduates, although applicants do not require a visa to apply. The residency is competitive, with 100% of the residents passing board exams.
