The Eglin Family Medicine Residency Program is situated at Eglin Air Force Base Hospital in Florida. This active duty-only program is recognized for its comprehensive training approach and unopposed environment, incorporating a diverse range of clinical experiences. With an enrollment of 11-12 residents per class, the program hosts various inpatient and outpatient services that include adult medicine, surgical specialties, obstetric care, and pediatric care among others. The residency provides an opportunity for residents to strengthen clinical skills while being part of a military community.

Curriculum Structure

The residency's training is structured into yearly rotations that span different specialties, ensuring residents gain extensive, hands-on experience across multiple clinical settings. The curriculum is divided into defined roles for each year of the residency (PGY1, PGY2, PGY3), covering essential areas such as inpatient, outpatient, pediatrics, surgery, and various subspecialties. Each PGY year has a tailored schedule. For instance, the PGY1 year includes inpatient training, pediatrics at Sacred Heart in Pensacola, labor and delivery, and outpatient clinics. PGY2 and PGY3 years continue to build on these foundations with increased responsibilities in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Research Opportunities

Residents are encouraged to engage in scholarly work, which includes completing at least one quality improvement project and one research initiative during their residency. This work is presented formally before graduation. The program has a strong emphasis on research, with residents having opportunities to publish articles in various medical journals and participate in conferences.

Unique Aspects

One distinctive feature of the Eglin program includes a Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) clinic, where residents can explore treatment options utilizing osteopathic manipulation and acupuncture. The program also offers an integrated Lifestyle Medicine curriculum, enabling interested residents to pursue certification as Lifestyle Medicine professionals through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.

Additionally, the Duration of Pregnancy (DOP) program allows residents to manage the care of pregnant patients throughout their entire journey from the initial visit to postpartum care, providing a unique opportunity for continuity of care.

Requirements and Competitiveness

The Eglin Family Medicine Residency program is competitive and is open to all medical graduates with a focus on active duty military personnel. Special application requirements include acceptable performance on medical licensing examinations (USMLE or COMLEX), and each candidate may have a maximum of one failed examination attempt in order to be eligible for application.
