Forrest General Hospital Program

The Forrest General Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program is designed to cultivate and train family physicians who can provide comprehensive and compassionate primary care. Established in 2014, the program aims to recruit, train, and retain academically excellent family physicians to meet the diverse healthcare needs of the local community.

Curriculum

The curriculum of the program is structured to provide a balanced experience over three years of training. In the first year (PGY1), residents gain essential diagnostic and management skills in both inpatient and outpatient settings, serving as the first point of contact for patient care. Emphasis is placed on building foundational skills necessary for effective decision-making and supervisory responsibilities.

In the second year (PGY2), residents transition to increased autonomy and responsibility while managing acutely ill patients, particularly in the Intensive Care Unit. They will also take on supervisory roles while gaining varied experience through subspecialty services. The third year (PGY3) allows residents to solidify their roles as mentors for junior residents and prepare for their future careers in family medicine. Each resident is expected to maintain continuity of care with a growing patient panel throughout the program, further enhancing their clinical skills.

To apply for the residency, candidates must submit an ERAS application, letters of recommendation, a dean's letter, and passing scores from USMLE or COMLEX Step 1 and Step 2. It is essential to note that the program does not sponsor J-1 or H1-B visas for applicants, which may influence international medical graduates' ability to apply. Additionally, applicants may apply before passing USMLE Step II or COMLEX Part II; however, they must provide documentation before match deadlines to be considered for ranking.
