Program Mission
The mission of the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program is to enhance the care and improvement of human life. Rooted in the HCA Healthcare philosophy of prioritizing patient care, the program aims to create an enriching learning environment where residents can thrive. Faculty members are committed to supporting the clinical and educational needs of each resident, promoting an immersive experience that respects cultural diversity and individual learning styles 1.
Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is strategically designed to ensure residents gain extensive experience in critical areas of family medicine. The rotation schedule provides comprehensive exposure across different medical disciplines, which is essential for a well-rounded education.
A sample rotation schedule for residents includes:
- PGY1: Family Medicine Orientation, Inpatient Psychiatry, Outpatient Pediatrics, Inpatient Adult Medicine, Continuity Clinic, Surgery, Night Float, and Electives.
- PGY2: Inpatient Adult Medicine, Inpatient Pediatrics, Night Float, Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Electives.
- PGY3: Intensive Care Unit, Gynecology, Behavioral Health, Geriatrics, and additional Electives.
Each resident participates in clinics at the Community Family Clinic in Idaho Falls, ensuring continuous patient care throughout their training 2.
Training Sites and Opportunities
Residents benefit from the program's well-established training sites, which offer diverse clinical experiences. The Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center houses a busy inpatient hospital service and a Level I Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This provides an ideal setting for learning how to manage complex cases often encountered in a community hospital. Opportunities to work alongside specialists in cardiology, neurology, and surgery enhance the educational experience.
The in-house Pediatrics training provides exposure to significant pediatric cases through inpatient pediatric services and NICU. Additionally, residents engage in mentorship and hands-on clinical experiences that prepare them for providing patient-centered, quality care 1.
Visa Support
The program does not directly sponsor visas; however, it recognizes that ECFMG is the sole entity responsible for visa sponsorship for physicians in clinical training programs. International medical graduates applying to the program must be ECFMG certified by the time of application 1.
Competitiveness and Application Requirements
The Family Medicine Residency Program is competitive in nature, and candidates are expected to have recently graduated from medical school (within the last two years) to be considered competitive. Special considerations may be made for applicants with additional qualifications or extensive research experience. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must also be ECFMG certified before applying 1.
Applicants are encouraged to have U.S. clinical experience, although it is not a mandatory requirement. However, observerships or externships are not considered sufficient clinical experience by the program 2.
Research and Professional Development
The program encourages involvement in research projects, allowing residents to delve into valuable inquiries that may influence the practice of family medicine. Residents have access to guidance and mentorship to promote their academic growth alongside their clinical training 1.
