The University of Montana Program

The University of Montana Family Medicine Residency Program offers a comprehensive 3-year ACGME accredited residency focused on training residents to deliver high-quality care in rural and underserved settings in Montana. The program is primarily based in Missoula, with an additional track in Kalispell, MT. In this structure, residents will spend the first year of training in Missoula and the subsequent two years in Kalispell, thereby benefiting from exposure to both urban and rural healthcare environments.

Key training locations include Providence St. Patrick Hospital and Community Medical Center in Missoula, along with Logan Health Medical Center in Kalispell. The program aims to equip residents with the skills required for effective practice in diverse healthcare settings, with a particular emphasis on rural healthcare.

Curriculum

The curriculum is longitudinal and includes various specialized tracks tailored to enhance learning experiences. Tracks offered include Rural Intensive, Reproductive Health, and Obstetrics. Additionally, residents can expect to participate in comprehensive training modules covering areas such as Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS), wilderness medicine, LGBTQ+ health, and refugee health. This wide array of training ensures that residents are well-prepared to address the needs of a diverse patient population.

Rotations

Rotational experiences are designed to provide a balanced exposure to essential areas of practice. Required rotations encompass less than two months in ICU and General Surgery, five months in Maternity, and five months in Pediatrics. Furthermore, residents have the opportunity to engage in international rotations, enriching their clinical experiences.

Training Sites

The program boasts a robust rural network consisting of over 15 training sites concentrated across western Montana. This network allows residents to gain first-hand experience in community health centers located in both Missoula and Kalispell. The program is committed to fostering the development of adaptable, knowledgeable practitioners who can cater to the healthcare needs of rural communities.

Visa Support and Competitiveness

The program offers visa sponsorship for international medical graduates, specifically supporting J-1 and H-1B visa types, thereby welcoming diverse applicants. Special Application Requirements
