Introduction to the Internal Medicine Residency Program

The Benefis Health System Internal Medicine Residency Program is designed to develop compassionate, knowledgeable, and versatile physicians who can address the diverse health needs of patients in Montana and beyond. With a strong emphasis on value-driven care, residents are empowered to innovate and provide high-quality healthcare while managing the complexities of population health.

Curriculum Overview

The residency follows a 3+1 rotation format, consisting of three weeks of clinical duties followed by one week of outpatient clinic experience. This structure is designed to enhance learning and practical application.

The curriculum is organized by postgraduate year (PGY):

• PGY-1: Inpatient Medicine (4 blocks), Pulmonology, Cardiology, ICU (2 blocks), GI, Nephrology, Ambulatory, Palliative Care.
• PGY-2: Inpatient Medicine (4 blocks), Geriatrics, Hematology/Oncology, ICU (2 blocks), Night Float, Electives (2 blocks).
• PGY-3: Inpatient Medicine, ICU, Night Float, Rheumatology, Infectious Disease, Electives (3 blocks), Neurology, Emergency Department, Endocrinology.

The academic structure includes a weekly Academic Half Day, which allows residents to engage in continuous learning with opportunities for mentorship and discussion on clinical cases.

Training Environment

As the primary training site, Benefis Health System is a large, multidisciplinary medical center with 614 beds, providing residents with a wide array of clinical experiences. The program is committed to resident wellness, facilitating a culture of support and camaraderie among peers and faculty.

Application Process and Requirements

The Benefis Internal Medicine Residency Program accepts applications exclusively through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Key application requirements include:

• Completed ERAS application.
• USMLE or COMLEX Step 1 report.
• Medical school transcript.
• Personal statement.
• Three letters of recommendation.
• MSPE (Dean's letter).
• Registered for NRMP.
• Successful completion of USMLE or COMLEX Step 2 prior to starting the program.

Residency interviews typically occur in early October through December, with scheduling facilitated through Thalamus.

• PGY-1: $61,800
• PGY-2: $65,400
• PGY-3: $69,000
