The Indiana University School of Medicine Med-Peds Residency Program is one of the premier Med-Peds training programs in the nation. Established in 1982, it is recognized for its educational, clinical, and scholarly opportunities. The program is relatively large with 56 residents, offering residents a balance between the categorical programs and ample social opportunities to develop strong ties as a tight-knit group.
The curriculum of the program is designed to meet the combined guidelines set by the American Boards of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Residents rotate between the Department of Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics every four months, gaining diverse experiences. The program aims to train physicians to be proficient primary care providers, delivering comprehensive and patient-centered care.
The Med-Peds Residency program accepts 14 interns each year. Residents spend 16 blocks as PGY1 interns, getting a mix of inpatient training at various hospitals. They have opportunities for elective rotations, conference series, and senior project presentations.
Chief Residents are integral in providing leadership and support to residents. The program also emphasizes resident wellness and education, fostering a supportive and close-knit community among peers.
After completing the residency, graduates have pursued careers in academic medicine, program leadership, primary care, subspecialty training, and hospital medicine across different states. Many graduates choose to stay in Indiana due to the benefits of low living costs and abundant clinical opportunities.
The application process for the Internal Medicine-Pediatrics program follows a holistic review approach and starts accepting applications through ERAS in September. The program conducts virtual interviews to ensure equitable opportunities for applicants.
Overall, the Indiana University School of Medicine Med-Peds Residency Program offers a robust training environment with a focus on comprehensive care and diverse clinical experiences.
