Residency Advisor

Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital offers a comprehensive Internal Medicine Residency Program that equips residents with the skills and knowledge needed for careers in general internal medicine or its specialties. The program focuses on providing a robust clinical environment complemented by substantial educational resources, mentorship, and opportunities for research.

The residency program operates within a 1,131-bed academic medical center and is a major trainer of healthcare professionals, accredited by the ACGME since 1960. Each year, the program accepts 24 residents through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP), with a newly introduced Primary Care Track aimed at enhancing training in outpatient settings.

Curriculum

The curriculum is structured to include both clinical and didactic experiences, carefully tailored to refine the residents’ skills in internal medicine. The first year focuses on core rotations that enhance fundamental clinical skills, including inpatient and acute care settings. Residents are given progressive responsibility, which fosters independent thinking and decision-making capabilities. The second and third years allow residents to choose elective rotations that include various subspecialties, allowing exposure to a broader range of medical conditions.

Each resident participates in rotations across several key areas, including Inpatient General Medicine, Critical Care, and Outpatient Medicine. The emphasis on outpatient care is evident in the continuity clinic rotations, enabling residents to build long-term relationships with their patient panels.

Research Opportunities

Engaging in research is encouraged, with structured support available for residents to present findings at regional and national meetings. Each resident is expected to complete a research project before graduation, contributing to both personal and professional growth. Bespoke training in biostatistics and regular support from the program's research committee ensures residents are well-prepared to undertake this challenge.

3

Faculty and Mentorship

The program boasts an extensive faculty of over 150 physicians, many of whom have dual appointments with leading medical schools. This diverse group includes educators specializing in all internal medicine subspecialties, thereby enriching the educational experience with varied perspectives and expertise. Residents receive mentorship tailored to their individual career goals, enhancing their readiness for fellowship and clinical practice.

4

Unique Aspects of the Program

Corewell Health emphasizes a culturally and socio-economically diverse patient population, providing residents with the opportunity to manage a range of medical conditions, particularly those affecting underserved communities. This diversity not only enhances clinical competency but also fosters cultural sensitivity among residents, which is invaluable in today’s healthcare landscape.

Visa Support

The program supports international medical graduates by sponsoring J-1 visas through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). The program does not offer sponsorship for H-1B visas, making the J-1 visa the primary option for eligible international applicants.

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The selection process is competitive; however, the program is open to both U.S. and international graduates. Candidates are reviewed holistically, with a preference for those who pass USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS on their first attempt and submit all application materials through ERAS. The program requires three letters of recommendation, a Dean’s letter, and ECFMG certification for international medical graduates. The program does not enforce a strict graduation date cut-off but values any relevant clinical experience.
