Indiana University School of Medicine offers one of the premier Internal Medicine-Pediatrics (Med-Peds) training programs in the nation. Clinical Experience

Med-Peds residents gain clinical exposure primarily at the Indianapolis campus' teaching hospitals, including a highly ranked children's hospital and a large county hospital. These institutions serve as referral centers for a diverse patient population of approximately 6.4 million, allowing residents to develop skills across a plethora of clinical situations alongside varying levels of autonomy. Additionally, residents partake in continuity clinics for half a day each week to foster ongoing patient relationships.

Rotations

The program includes 20 months of direct patient care across multiple hospitals, with the majority of time dedicated to inpatient settings. The foundational training entails three months in intensive care and experience in busy emergency departments. Ambulatory electives allow for a breadth of specialty exposures ranging from cardiology to dermatology, ensuring residents acquire a well-rounded education.

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The Med-Peds residency at IU is highly competitive and is known to be friendly toward DO and IMG applicants. Specific application requirements include completion through ERAS with a Common Application Form, three letters of recommendation, and a USMLE Step 1 score (currently Pass/Fail). Other documentation such as Medical School transcripts and a personal statement is also required. Importantly, applicants must upload their USMLE Step 2 score by a defined deadline.
