Program Overview
Located in Allentown, Pennsylvania, LVHN is one of the largest health systems in the state. It serves the healthcare needs of the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas, presenting residents with a diverse patient population and a variety of clinical scenarios ranging from straightforward to complex cases. This diversity enriches the educational experience, allowing residents to develop necessary clinical competencies across multiple specialties and settings.
1Curriculum Structure
The Transitional Year Residency Curriculum is formatted into 13 blocks, each lasting approximately four weeks. Residents will engage in various rotations, which include:
- Three blocks in inpatient general medicine
- One block in cardiac intensive care unit (CICU)
- One block in medical intensive care unit (MICU)
- One block in emergency medicine
- One block in ambulatory medicine, which includes both internal medicine and family medicine
- Electives that may encompass various specialties such as radiology, pediatrics, surgery, and more
This diverse exposure helps residents build a solid foundation in clinical medicine while preparing for their designated specialty training thereafter.
2Call Structure and Schedule

The night float schedule involves a team of interns and residents covering admissions and managing patient care overnight, ensuring ample opportunity for learning while promoting wellness.
3Clinical Experience and Learning Modalities
Direct patient observation is emphasized throughout the residency. Residents participate in OSCE (Observed Standardized Clinical Encounters) at the LVHN's Interdisciplinary Simulation Center, allowing interaction with standardized patients and fostering crucial clinical skills. The curriculum includes didactic sessions such as medical grand rounds, specialty lectures, and various core subspecialty conferences that occur weekly, ensuring that education remains a priority throughout residency.
4Research and Academic Opportunities
Residents at LVHN have access to ongoing clinical research through the Department of Medicine, providing a collaborative environment where they can engage in scholarly work while applying clinical knowledge to real-world challenges. A dedicated faculty members support residents in this endeavor, reinforcing the importance of research in medical education.
5Benefits and Support
As part of the Transitional Year residency, residents enjoy a comprehensive benefits package that includes:
- Malpractice and health insurance
- Vacation days and other leave opportunities
- Financial support for educational expenses including conference attendance
- Wellness programs offering fitness memberships and cultural activities
The program is committed to the well-being and professional development of its residents, fostering an atmosphere conducive to both personal and academic success.
6Visa Sponsorship and Application Requirements
For international medical graduates (IMGs), LVHN offers sponsorship for J1 and H1B visas, making it accessible for candidates from around the globe. The application process requires passing scores on USMLE Steps 1 and 2 on the first attempt, emphasizing the program's competitive nature. While U.S. clinical experience is preferred, it is not mandatory for application. The program does not provide observerships or externships.

The Lehigh Valley area offers a blend of cultural, recreational, and professional experiences. Positioned near Philadelphia and New York City, it boasts a lower cost of living compared to these metropolitan areas while providing a supportive community atmosphere for residents.
