Categorical Anesthesiology Residency Program

The Categorical Anesthesiology Residency Program offers a structured curriculum that spans four years, designated as Post-Graduate Year (PGY) 1 through 4:1

• PGY-1: Residents experience a blend of rotations including 4 months in internal medicine, and 1 month in each of acute care surgery, cardiac care unit, cardiac consult service, chronic pain medicine, emergency medicine, neuro ICU, and perioperative surgical home. Additional exposure includes three weeks in anesthesiology and one week in transfusion medicine and process improvement.1

• PGY-2 / CA-1: This year emphasizes operating room anesthesia at both the main campus and the VA hospital, supplemented by experiences in chronic and acute pain/regional anesthesia, and pre-anesthesia consultation and education.1

• PGY-3 / CA-2: Residents rotate through pediatric anesthesia, cardiothoracic anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, OB anesthesia, the surgical ICU, cardiothoracic ICU, and the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).1

• PGY-4 / CA-3: The final year focuses on advanced clinical experiences and electives in pediatric and cardiothoracic anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, OB anesthesia, general operating room anesthesia, and intensive care units.1
