The Plastic Surgery Residency program at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, led by Dr. T. Shane Johnson and Dr. John Ingraham, offers a comprehensive training experience. The program has nine full-time staff surgeons based at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and three private-practice plastic surgeons in Harrisburg.

Residents are actively involved in subspecialty clinics covering various areas such as hand surgery, skin oncology, cosmetic surgery, craniofacial surgery, cleft lip and palate surgery, and vascular anomalies, including multidisciplinary clinics at Penn State Health and the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic.

The educational experience is highly valued, with resident involvement in conference structuring to provide a broad-based didactic experience. Topics covered include hand surgery, orthopaedics, picture rounds, surgical indications, resident small group meetings, morbidity & mortality, and research conferences.

Research is a mandatory component of the plastic surgery residency, with expectations for publications and academic presentations. The division has several NIH-funded projects, including the Irvin S. Zubar Plastic Surgery Laboratory which conducts basic science and clinical studies.

The Penn State Plastic Surgery Residency program uses ERAS for recruitment and matching. They generally receive around 250 completed applications annually, granting interviews to 30 applicants for two categorical positions. The interview process includes formal interviews with faculty members and chief residents.

Furthermore, there are multiple rotations throughout the training years, including international rotations available during PGY-5 and PGY-6. The program also supports various benefits and stipends, providing residents with competitive salaries, health, dental and vision plans, vacation days, and CME opportunities.
