The Vascular Surgery Residency Program at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine offers a comprehensive five-year integrated program that aims to train well-rounded, independent, and safe practicing vascular surgeons. The program is centered at two Level 1 500-bed hospitals in Springfield, IL: Springfield Memorial Hospital and HSHS St. John's Hospital.
The curriculum covers all aspects of vascular surgery and prepares graduates for either the practice of vascular surgery or fellowship training. Residents have the opportunity to engage in a variety of clinical training experiences and research opportunities.
Application to the residency program requires the submission of three letters of recommendation, a personal statement, curriculum vitae, dean's letter, medical school transcripts, USMLE scores, and ECFMG certification if applicable.
The Division of Vascular Surgery at SIU has a strong reputation in surgical education and offers various learning experiences, including a surgical skills lab and structured rotations in the first three years, in conjunction with the Division of General Surgery.
Residents participate in resident conferences, including Vascular Core Conference, Vascular M&M and Interesting Case Conference, and Vascular Conference held on Fridays. Additionally, the program includes rotations in Vascular Surgery, General Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Trauma, Ortho Foot/Ankle, Plastics, Vascular Lab, Anesthesia, Plastic Surgery, Trauma, ENT, and Cardiothoracic.
