St. Joseph's Medical Center in Stockton offers a comprehensive Internal Medicine Residency Program that launched its inaugural class in July 2020. The residency trains physicians in a high-volume, diverse clinical environment, serving a broad patient population across the 355-bed facility known for its excellence in patient care. The Integrated Heart & Vascular Institute at the center is nationally recognized, and the facility houses the only accredited cancer center in San Joaquin County, alongside being a Certified Primary Stroke Center.

The third year (PGY-3) further emphasizes critical care and prepares residents for electives in geriatrics, sleep medicine, and advanced subspecialty topics.

Application Process and Requirements

Applicants to the St. Joseph's Internal Medicine Residency Program must apply via the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Key application materials include a personal statement, current CV, medical school transcripts, and letters of recommendation—specifically two letters from Internal Medicine faculty members and an optional third from a closely working attending physician. Only graduates from approved medical schools recognized by the California Medical Board are eligible, with a maximum of one failure permitted on either the USMLE Step 1 or Step 2 CK. Moreover, applicants must hold ECFMG certification if they are international medical graduates (IMGs).

Visa Sponsorship

The program accepts J-1 visas but does not sponsor immigrant or nonimmigrant visas for international graduates. Therefore, all international applicants are required to demonstrate employment authorization before their interview.
