St Joseph's Medical Center Program

The St. Joseph's Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program, located in Stockton, California, provides a comprehensive training environment for aspiring family medicine physicians. It began welcoming residents in summer 2018 and achieved a significant milestone by expanding to a 10-10-10 program in May 2022. This expansion is part of a broader effort to enhance Graduate Medical Education at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, which also includes programs in emergency medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry, anesthesiology, urology, neurology, and more, showing a commitment to multidisciplinary learning and collaboration.

The program is highly dedicated to providing quality care and education to a diverse and often underserved community, aligning with its vision to impact health and well-being positively by working to reduce health disparities. Residents train at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, the largest regional medical center in San Joaquin County, which has received notable accolades for its clinical performance and is equipped with 355 beds.

One unique aspect of the training includes outpatient continuity clinic experience at Community Medical Centers – Channel, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) and a Primary Care Medical Home (PCMH), allowing residents to serve over 100,000 patients in the area. This provides residents with a dynamic and diverse training environment in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Other highlights of the program include comprehensive training in various key areas of family medicine, such as adult inpatient service, night float, ICU, ambulatory care, and more, emphasizing hands-on patient care and procedural skills. The curriculum is designed to cover a broad spectrum of medical issues, preparing residents to tackle a range of clinical challenges confidently.

The program stresses scholarly activity, requiring residents to engage in at least two projects during their training, promoting an environment of continuous learning and research.

Applicants must have graduated from an approved medical school within the last two years, and while the program accepts J-1 visas, it does not provide any direct visa sponsorship.

The interview process for the 2023-2024 cycle will be conducted virtually to promote financial and demographic equity across applicants, in line with recommendations from several family medicine associations.
