The University at Buffalo General Surgery Residency Program is one of the oldest and largest in the nation, dedicated to molding the surgical leaders of the future. For residents interested in further specialization, programs such as the Vascular Integrated Residency and the Surgery Plus Program, which allows for pursuit of advanced degrees, are available.

Research Opportunities

Recognizing the importance of academic engagement, the program allows residents to dedicate protected time to pursue clinical and basic sciences research. This engagement can range from involvement in epidemiological studies to basic science investigations. The option exists for residents to undertake 1 to 2 dedicated research years, enhancing both knowledge and expertise in their areas of interest.

Applicants must meet specific criteria, including a USMLE minimum score of 225 on both parts 1 and 2 during their first attempts. Additionally, the program expects graduates to have completed their medical education within the past five years and to have clinical experience in the United States.
