University of California (Irvine) Program

The UC Irvine Clinical Informatics Fellowship is a comprehensive two-year program offered by the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of California, Irvine. The program is designed to prepare participants for certification in the subspecialty of Clinical Informatics. This multidisciplinary fellowship involves collaboration with faculty from various departments, including Internal Medicine, the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, and the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS).

Clinical informatics is defined as the subspecialty that integrates information technology and healthcare to improve patient care, enhance access to healthcare, and strengthen the clinician-patient relationship. The fellowship aims to cultivate future leaders in the field by providing a strong foundation in information technology, change management, and process improvement. Educational Experience

The educational experiences within the fellowship incorporate various components aimed at enhancing the fellows' skill sets. Upon completing the fellowship, participants will be eligible for board certification in Clinical Informatics.

Rotations

Fellows will have the opportunity to engage in dedicated monthly rotations that focus on key components of Clinical Informatics. These rotations allow fellows to apply their newly acquired informatics skills to live projects and receive valuable feedback from program faculty. The flexibility of the rotation structure ensures alignment with each fellow's career objectives while providing exposure to various healthcare systems and electronic medical records.

Didactic Sessions

Participation in didactic sessions is mandatory for all fellows. These sessions cover core curriculum topics and include journal clubs and case studies presented by experienced faculty. Additionally, fellows will be encouraged to attend various clinical and research conferences throughout the fellowship.

Longitudinal Research Project

In the second year of the fellowship, each fellow is required to design and conduct a longitudinal research project. This project is chosen based on the fellow's career goals and experiences identified during their initial rotations. Access to resources from the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences and UC Irvine's extensive library system supports these research endeavors.

Clinical Time

Fellows are allocated dedicated clinical time to practice within their primary specialty, ensuring a well-rounded training experience that melds clinical practice with informatics training.

Accreditation

The UC Irvine Clinical Informatics Fellowship is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This reflects its adherence to high educational standards and commitment to training fellows in Clinical Informatics.

Application Requirements and Competitiveness

Applicants to the fellowship program must have graduated from a recognized medical school and completed a residency in an ABMS-approved specialty. Candidates must be board-certified or board-eligible at the time of their application and eligible for a permanent California medical license. Notably, formal training in Computer Science is not a requirement.

The program is competitive, and prospective applicants are encouraged to demonstrate their commitment to informatics through academic excellence and relevant experiences.
