The University of Chicago Otolaryngology Residency training program emphasizes providing an outstanding clinical experience for residents. Residents participate in diverse clinics and over 2000 surgical cases during their 5 years of training. The program aims to foster a close-knit relationship between faculty and residents, offering one-on-one experiences with faculty from various otolaryngology subspecialties. Training primarily takes place at the University of Chicago's tertiary care facility and Northshore University Health Systems, with additional training opportunities at Ingalls Hospital and surgi-centers based on surgical needs.
Starting from the 2019-2020 match season, the program has been recruiting 3 residents annually through the national Resident Matching Program, with the intention of reaching a full complement of 15 residents by 2024. The University of Chicago offers robust facilities, including UChicago Medicine Center for Care and Discovery, Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine, and Comer Children's hospital, all interconnected on the Hyde Park Campus.
Diversity and inclusion are core tenets of the program's mission, with faculty participating in implicit bias training workshops and engaging in activities that promote diversity and equity. Residents are encouraged to contribute to the Department's diversity and inclusion initiatives. The program is committed to training future otolaryngologists from diverse backgrounds to take on leadership roles in the field.
The Department offers a surgical specialty sub-internship designed for fourth-year medical students interested in gaining a comprehensive understanding of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. The program covers a wide range of conditions and procedures under the mentorship of experienced faculty members. Students are expected to participate in various conferences and weekly rounds, culminating in a Grand Round presentation at the end of the rotation.
For students interested in applying for the sub-internship, eligibility includes being a fourth-year medical student from LCME Accredited Medical Schools.
