Overview

The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program at the University of Connecticut aims to develop future leaders in medicine through a rigorous clinical training environment complemented by innovative research opportunities. This fellowship offers comprehensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of hematological and oncological disorders while emphasizing precision medicine, particularly through collaborations with the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine located in nearby Farmington.

1

The fellowship encompasses extensive clinical training throughout its duration. The first year is particularly focused on managing a wide range of pediatric hematology and oncology cases, providing fellows with the foundational skills necessary for proficient clinical practice. Trainees will rotate through various units, including pediatric outpatient clinics and inpatient settings, focusing on the complex care of patients suffering from conditions like acute leukemias and solid tumors, as well as non-malignant disorders such as sickle cell disease and hemophilia.

4

The clinical curriculum is structured to enhance fellows' competencies in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The second year includes specialized training in stem cell transplantation at renowned institutions like Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children's Hospital, further solidifying the fellows' skill set in advanced oncological treatments. In addition, various other rotations provide exposure to radiation oncology and laboratory medicine.

3

Research plays a significant role in the fellowship, with dedicated time allotted for fellows to engage in scholarly activities and projects. Each fellow is encouraged to develop their research interests with mentorship from faculty, focusing on cutting-edge topics like genomic medicine. The program facilitates a rich research environment through its collaborations, allowing fellows to explore a multitude of areas, including basic science, clinical trials, and translational research that can ultimately contribute to advancing pediatric hematology and oncology.

12

Connecticut Children’s, where the fellowship is primarily conducted, is recognized as the only health system in Connecticut dedicated solely to pediatric care and has been ranked among the best children’s hospitals in the country. The center is equipped with expert staff, including ten board-certified faculty members, advanced practitioners, and a host of supportive clinical personnel, ensuring that fellows receive comprehensive training in a nurturing environment.

1

The program also emphasizes diversity and inclusion, aiming to create an educational and clinical environment that reflects the patient population of Connecticut. By encouraging a diverse cohort of fellows, the program seeks to influence the quality of care provided to all populations served.

14

When considering application requirements, potential candidates should note that the program is highly competitive. Applicants must have completed an ACGME-accredited pediatric residency and hold valid ECFMG certification if they are international medical graduates. No specific minimum score is required for the USMLE, however, candidates must pass each step on their first attempt to be considered for interviews. Notably, the program only sponsors J-1 visas for foreign medical graduates.

16

Fellowship benefits include a generous support package that covers various educational expenses and provides a strong administrative infrastructure. Each fellow benefits from four weeks of vacation per year and is entitled to a stipend for attending conferences and medical meetings, alongside additional efforts focused on personal well-being and mental health.

17

Finally, the program provides a variety of didactic sessions intended to deepen fellows' knowledge and foster collaborative learning. Regular conferences and case discussions, along with structured mentorship, aid in fostering a supportive and interactive learning atmosphere.
