The Laboratory Medicine and Pathology residency training program at the University of Minnesota Medical School offers a distinctive four-year combined anatomic and clinical, as well as three-year anatomic or clinical pathology-only, residency training program. They provide structural flexibility to customize training plans for community, academic, and research careers.

Application Requirements:

  • Graduates from LCME-accredited U.S. or Canadian medical schools, AOA-accredited U.S. osteopathic medical schools, or ECFMG-certified medical schools outside the U.S. and Canada are eligible.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Must not have 3 or more USMLE/COMLEX failures.
  • Must be fluent in English.
  • Prefer J-1 visa applicants.
  • No discrimination based on various factors.

Training Sites:

  • Abbott Northwestern Hospital
  • Hennepin County Medical Center
  • M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center
  • Veterans' Affairs Medical Center

Rotations:

  • Four-year combined and three-year anatomic or clinical pathology-only program.
  • Completion of core anatomic and/or clinical pathology rotations.
  • Autopsies and a formal Departmental Grand Rounds are required.
  • Research participation encouraged.

Goals & Objectives:

  • Anatomic Pathology rotations at various sites.
  • Clinical Pathology rotations focusing on various disciplines.
  • Elective rotations to enhance learning.

Post-Residency Program Fellowship Positions:

  • List of fellowship positions where residents have gone after completing the program.

Research Experience:

  • Emphasis on impactful research experience during training.
  • Opportunities for residents to engage in mentored research projects.
  • Small research grants available.

Observerships:

  • Currently not accepting applications for observerships.
