UNMC's Pathology Residency Program is uniquely designed to offer a comprehensive experience in both Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology. The curriculum incorporates a wealth of clinical and didactic experiences, preparing graduates for various career paths in pathology.

Program Overview

The residency program is ACGME-accredited and consists of core rotations through essential anatomic and clinical pathology disciplines, backed by advanced rotations in subspecialties such as molecular diagnostics, forensic pathology, pediatric pathology, and several others. Each year, the program offers 16 resident positions, with three to four residents accepted annually. This ensures a robust learning environment with ample opportunities for interaction and mentorship from faculty and fellows.

Curriculum and Rotations

The curriculum is designed to accommodate diverse career ambitions, balancing comprehensive training in all major areas of pathology while allowing for specialized interests. Residents benefit from a comprehensive didactic series, numerous interdisciplinary conferences, and active participation in clinical services.

Core rotations cover surgical pathology, clinical microbiology, hematopathology, transfusion medicine, and more. Residents handle over 60,000 surgical specimens annually, reflecting the program’s emphasis on varied and interconnected exposures. Training includes hands-on experience in areas such as autopsy pathology, molecular pathology, and blood bank operations, with practical lab experiences complementing didactic sessions.

Research Opportunities

Residents are strongly encouraged to engage in clinical research, with many having their work presented at national pathology meetings. The program offers both community-based and basic research opportunities, allowing residents to dedicate six months to research electives focused on projects under the guidance of faculty members.

Teaching Involvement

Teaching opportunities are paramount, with residents involved in training medical students and fellow trainees. The program participates in the Health Educators and Academic Leaders (HEAL) initiative, equipping residents with best practices in medical education.

Visa Sponsorship

The program accommodates international applicants, sponsoring J-1 Visas for eligible residents. It requires a passing USMLE score, preferably from the first attempt, and candidates who have graduated from medical school within the last ten years are preferred.

Application Requirements

Application to the program is through the ERAS system. Required materials include the common application form, personal statement, official medical school transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. USMLE scores must be submitted as they become available. International medical graduates must also provide ECFMG status and document any relevant clinical experiences in the US or Canada.
