The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Medicine Program offers a comprehensive Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program that is accredited through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Successful completion of the residency allows board eligibility by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The program accepts four new residents annually, but after a permanent complement increase in 2023, approval has been granted for five residents per year in the four-year program.
The curriculum is designed to provide residents with a longitudinal experience in the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of gynecologic and obstetric conditions to equip them for independent and competent practice in the specialty. Residents have the opportunity to work with various specialists, including generalists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, gynecologic oncologists, midwives, and others. Rotations include exposure to diverse areas such as gynecologic oncology, high-risk obstetrics, benign gynecology, and more.
Residents participate in dedicated educational sessions, including grand rounds, case conferences, journal clubs, and other educational activities. The program also integrates simulation training to enhance surgical skills, including obstetric and gynecological surgeries. Research and quality improvement projects are mandatory, with residents presenting their work at Resident's Research Day annually.
The residency application process requires submission through the Association of American Medical Colleges ERAS system. The program seeks candidates with excellent academic performance and a strong interest in pursuing Obstetrics and Gynecology as the next step in their career. Application requirements include the ERAS Common Application Form, personal statement, transcripts, performance evaluations, letters of reference, and USMLE or COMLEX Step 1 and 2 scores.
For international medical graduates, ECFMG status report and visa status are additional requirements. The program supports J1 Visa or Permanent Residence for visa sponsorship. There is no minimum USMLE/COMLEX Step 1 score or attempt limit specified.
Further details about the program's benefits, educational opportunities, clinical locations, and resident life experiences can be found on the program's website.
