University of Mississippi School of Medicine Program

The University of Mississippi School of Medicine offers a Plastic Surgery Residency program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The program, under the direction of Benjamin C. McIntyre, MD, FACS, provides both integrated and independent tracks for training.

The integrated track offers six positions for a six-year duration, while the independent track has three positions for a three-year duration. The program is fully ACGME accredited. The residents have diverse backgrounds, and the program emphasizes providing care to an underserved population in Mississippi.

Trainees at the University of Mississippi Medical Center gain experience in a wide range of plastic surgical procedures, including hand and craniofacial trauma, extremity salvage, and complex ablative reconstructions. They also have the opportunity to perform microsurgical reconstructions like DIEP flaps for breast and fibula osseocutaneous flaps for head and neck.

Residents rotate through various facilities, including UMMC, Children's of Mississippi, and the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery VA hospital, to gain exposure to a private practice environment. The program also includes didactic lectures, preop conferences, journal clubs, and meetings such as the ASPS annual meeting and Plastic Surgery Boot Camp.

The plastic surgery faculty at the University of Mississippi Medical Center includes experts in various specialties such as chest wall reconstruction, abdominal wall reconstruction, breast surgery, and craniofacial surgery. These faculty members offer a wealth of knowledge and experience to the residents in training.
