The University of Tennessee Health Science Center - Campbell Clinic Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering offers a comprehensive five-year accredited residency program for 40 residents. The program is directed by Dr. Derek M. Kelly and provides a well-balanced foundation in academic learning and practical clinical experience.
Residents in this program experience a broad range of orthopaedic subspecialties through rotations in trauma, sports medicine, total joint, general orthopaedics, adult reconstructive surgery, pediatric orthopaedics, foot and ankle surgery, hand surgery, spine surgery, orthopaedic oncology, and anatomy and pathology. The program emphasizes a robust operative experience combined with extensive clinical exposure in both academic and private practice settings.
To prepare residents for the Orthopaedic In-service Training Examination (OITE) and Step I of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery examination, the program features a weekly three-hour Core Curriculum conference and various subspecialty conferences. Resources for clinical and biomechanical research are provided, including nurse coordinators, database access for patient outcomes, a biomechanics laboratory, and an extensive orthopaedic library.
The Campbell Clinic residency program has a rich history dating back over 100 years and has trained numerous successful orthopaedic surgeons, with a focus on excellence in education, research, and patient care. Residents have the opportunity to present their research at regional and national meetings. The program includes rotations at various affiliated institutions in the Memphis metropolitan area.
For those interested in applying, the program requires completion of the ERAS application by November 1st, including three letters of recommendation, Dean’s Letter, transcripts, and USMLE Step I score.
