4234121057The UPMC Medical Education Program in Neuroradiology is designed to provide advanced training in the subspecialty of neuroradiology, offering an in-depth educational experience that balances clinical practice with research opportunities. The program, based at the University of Pittsburgh, is accredited by the ACGME, and aims to foster the next generation of neuroradiologists through rigorous training and diverse clinical exposures.
Program Structure
The fellowship program typically spans one year for those who have completed requisite postgraduate training. There is also an opportunity for further focused second-year training in specialized areas such as Pediatric Neuroradiology, spine intervention, and head and neck imaging. The program accepts three to four fellows annually, making it a competitive choice for aspiring neuroradiologists due to the high-caliber training offered.6
Training Sites
Fellows are primarily based at Presbyterian University Hospital (PUH) and also gain experience at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. This dual-site training provides an expansive catchment area that covers Western Pennsylvania and extends to surrounding states, ensuring a diverse patient population and various case presentations.6
Clinical Rotations
The clinical experience is vast, encompassing various rotations that include:
- PUH Reading Room: Fellows encounter general neuroradiology cases and participate in interpreting a wide range of studies, including CT, MRI, MR spectroscopy, and myelography.
- Head & Neck Imaging: Approximately three months are spent on the dedicated head and neck service, interpreting imaging studies related to oncology procedures.
- Spine Rotation: This two-month rotation offers hands-on experiences with diagnostic and therapeutic spine procedures, such as discograms and epidural steroid injections.
- Neuroangiography: Fellows spend around one and a half months on neuroangiography service, where they participate in procedures related to vascular malformations and acute stroke care.
- Pediatric Neuroradiology: At Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, fellows engage in all aspects of pediatric neuroimaging for about two months.
Additionally, there is a neuropathology rotation that encompasses participation in weekly conferences, thus enriching the fellows' educational experiences.7
Research Opportunities
Fellows are encouraged to participate in research initiatives which are supported by advanced facilities including an MRI Research Center. They also have access to resources for proposing grant funding and are expected to present at least one research paper at notable annual neuroradiology society meetings, enhancing their academic portfolios.8
Educational Benefits
Alongside the practical training, fellows receive a comprehensive educational funding allotment to cover costs related to meeting attendance, travel, and electronic materials. A structured mentorship and networking opportunities can significantly bolster their career prospects.
Visa Support
The UPMC Medical Education Program in Neuroradiology supports various visa types for international applicants, enabling them to pursue advanced training in the United States. Applicants need to hold an appropriate visa as per the requirements set by the ACGME to be eligible for the fellowship.6
Competitiveness and Application Process
Given the quality of training and the comprehensive experiences offered, the fellowship is highly competitive. It seeks applicants with strong clinical backgrounds and an aptitude for academic pursuits in neuroradiology. Special application requirements may include previous clinical training completion and the possession of an institutional training license. Applicants are typically required to submit their applications through ERAS, participating in the NRMP Neuroradiology Match program to secure a fellowship position.8
