WakeMed Health and Hospitals Program

The WakeMed Health and Hospitals Program offers an Internal Medicine Residency Program that is a categorical community-based hospital program with 15 residents at full complement. They accept five residents each year through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The program received ACGME accreditation in 2020 and has been a participating site for residency training for over 50 years.

The residents in this program have the opportunity to interact closely with attending physicians and gain hands-on access to patient care through one-on-one faculty instruction. The diverse group of dedicated physicians offers a broad range of experience to residents, helping them develop strong diagnostic, treatment, and bedside skills.

The three-year training program at WakeMed includes a structured core curriculum and elective rotations. Residents focus on primary care and subspecialty medicine and have opportunities to gain broad experience through elective study periods. The program aims to prepare residents for community-based practice or hospitalist careers while also providing exposure to subspecialty medicine for those interested in fellowship training.

Residents have the chance to train in both inpatient and outpatient settings using a 4+2 block schedule. This allows for an uninterrupted clinic experience and ensures protected time for quality improvement and research projects. The program offers various didactic opportunities like Morning Report, Grand Rounds, specialty-specific lectures, and more.

The application process for the WakeMed Internal Medicine Residency Program requires submission through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applicants are selected for interviews based on various criteria such as evidence of commitment to patient-focused care, academic achievement, professionalism, and clinical skills. The program values diversity and inclusion in its resident selection process.

For the 2023 ERAS cycle, the program is participating in the supplemental ERAS application offered through the AAMC’s ERAS program. Required materials include a completed ERAS application, personal statement, recommendation letters, USMLE/COMLEX scores, medical school transcript, and a curriculum vitae.
