West Virginia University Program

The West Virginia University Pathology Residency Program offers strong basic training in anatomic and clinical pathology with subspecialties. The program aims to develop a robust medical knowledge and skill base while fostering professional attributes necessary for independent and competent practice in pathology. Training is available for new graduates and post-doctoral experienced individuals at three sites: West Virginia University (an academic tertiary care referral center) and Charleston Area Medical Center (a large community hospital). Residents are encouraged to explore careers in both community hospital and academic pathology.

Residents receive comprehensive training in anatomic pathology, which includes surgical pathology, cytopathology, autopsy pathology, and various subspecialties like dermatopathology, pediatric pathology, and neuropathology. Clinical Pathology training covers hematology, clinical chemistry, medical microbiology, molecular pathology, and more. Additionally, residents participate in teaching programs and research opportunities within the department.

Facilities for residents include Ruby Memorial, a 500-bed teaching hospital and Level 1-trauma center that serves West Virginia and neighboring regions. The program emphasizes computerized systems, digital imaging, information technology, and outreach activities to rural hospitals in West Virginia.

The department helps residents develop competencies aligned with ACGME requirements and provides various evaluation tools to support self-improvement and practice-based learning.

The program welcomes applications from first-year resident candidates from U.S. or Canadian medical schools. ERAS registration is advised unless applying for upper-level positions or fellowships directly. All appointments typically begin on July 1st unless otherwise arranged.
