The program is designed to nourish the intellectual curiosity of its residents while fostering compassion and patient-centered care.
Program Overview
The Internal Medicine Residency at the Augusta University/UGA Medical Partnership is a community-based program, efficiently unopposed, that allows residents ample opportunities for hands-on learning without the competition of other residency programs. The program’s mission is focused on addressing the physician shortage in Georgia and enhancing healthcare access in underserved and rural areas. As a result, the rotation experiences are designed to encompass a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, allowing residents to understand the communities they will serve better. This approach helps in training compassionate and competent physicians who are equipped to provide high-quality medical care.
1Curriculum Structure
The residency utilizes a 4 + 2 scheduling model, providing a structured yet flexible curriculum:
PGY I
The first year emphasizes building a strong core foundation in internal medicine through rotations, including inpatient medicine, cardiology, critical care, and neurology, alongside ambulatory medicine experiences in continuity clinics and night medicine. This foundational experience sets the stage for developing both clinical and patient management skills.
2PGY II
In the second year, residents gain more responsibility and leadership roles, managing inpatient teams. They navigate diverse rotations across multiple specialties, such as endocrinology, emergency medicine, and infectious diseases, allowing them to explore areas of personal interest further.
3PGY III
The third year prepares residents for independent practice, incorporating essential electives that further specialize their training. Notably, PGY III residents have the chance to participate in a unique rural care medicine rotation at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital, deepening their understanding of rural healthcare environments.
4Training Sites
The primary training site for the program is St. Mary’s Hospital, a 196-bed facility renowned for its commitment to quality patient care and community service. In addition, residents engage in continuity care at Community Internal Medicine of Athens, where they establish long-term relationships with patients while managing comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care. Furthermore, St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital serves as a critical access hospital providing residents with insight into rural health resource management.
5Resident Life and Support
The program's faculty is dedicated to guiding residents throughout their training, ensuring a collegial environment where they can thrive both personally and professionally. The program strives to create a supportive community where residents’ feedback is leveraged to enhance their educational experience. Residents enjoy benefits that include competitive salaries, comprehensive health and welfare benefits, free meals, and educational stipends for professional development.
6Research and Academic Opportunities
Residents are encouraged to participate in research opportunities, particularly through the Clinical & Translational Research Unit, fostering an environment of inquiry and scholarly activity. The program values academic engagement, providing robust attendance at conferences, journal clubs, and grand rounds to ensure residents are well-versed in current medical practices and innovations.
Application Process and Requirements
The program accepts applications solely through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applicants must have graduated from a recognized medical school, possess a valid ECFMG certification if they are international medical graduates (IMGs), and have at least three months of U.S. clinical experience. The program is particularly welcoming to diverse backgrounds, including U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and ECFMG-sponsored applicants. Candidates must submit a personal statement, a current CV, an official medical school transcript, letters of recommendation, and USMLE/COMLEX scores.
