Bayhealth Medical Center Program
Overview
The Bayhealth General Surgery Residency Program is dedicated to training excellent surgeons who are also compassionate physicians. The program emphasizes early operating room experience and aims to develop surgeons who can lead in their communities and the broader surgical field. The curriculum highlights the importance of clinical research and evidence-based medicine, facilitated through journal clubs and performance improvement projects, ensuring residents remain current with evolving medical knowledge and practices.
Curriculum Overview
Curriculum Structure
Residents in the program will begin their training with ample operating room time, free from competition with fellows, which allows for hands-on learning right from the start. The curriculum is extensive, structured across five years of training with a variety of rotations to encompass a broad range of surgical disciplines.
Key rotations include:
- PGY-1: General Surgery (32 weeks), Surgical ICU (4 weeks), Trauma Acute Care Services (4 weeks), among other rotations.
- PGY-2: General Surgery (32 weeks), Surgical Oncology (4 weeks), Trauma (4 weeks), along with night float rotations.
- PGY-3: Comprehensive exposure to Cardiothoracic Surgery (4 weeks), Pediatric Surgery, and more specialized training.
- PGY-4: Elective rotations plus key surgical fields.
- PGY-5: Concentration in Hepatobiliary Surgery and Surgical Oncology to finalize training.
This structured approach ensures that residents develop a robust skill set applicable to various surgical scenarios, preparing them for general surgery or subsequent fellowships.
1Clinical Training Sites
Training Locations
Bayhealth’s clinical training occurs in two primary facilities: Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus, and Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus.
Kent Campus: This facility is a 317-bed center offering a wide range of services including cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, and a level III trauma Emergency Department with significant annual patient volume.
Sussex Campus: A 128-bed facility that also offers comprehensive surgical services and is equipped with a 24-hour Emergency Department that caters to the local population.
In addition to the two hospitals, residents gain experience through rotations at specialized institutions such as the Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children for pediatric surgeries and Crozer-Chester Medical Center for burn treatments. This diverse exposure broadens the educational breadth and experience of the residents.
