Bayhealth Medical Center Program
Overview
The Bayhealth Family Medicine Residency Program is designed to provide comprehensive training to future family medicine physicians. Launched in 2021, the program emphasizes innovative training and advocacy, preparing residents for the evolving healthcare landscape. With over 30,000 patient care visits conducted in the Dover, Delaware area, the program has established a commitment to both patient care and community service. Residents are cultivated to embody leadership traits which enhance their role as advocates for patients, making a significant impact on community health.
1The residency follows an 8-8-8 structure, offering a rigorous curriculum that covers all aspects of family medicine, balancing both inpatient and outpatient care for patients of all ages. The program encourages residents to lead quality improvement initiatives and partake in enhancing patient care at Bayhealth's state-of-the-art outpatient practice. A core mission of the residency is to connect residents with the Kent, Sussex, and broader Delaware community, reinforcing their sense of purpose and commitment to serving those in need.
1Training and Curriculum
Residents will experience a three-year longitudinal community medicine program designed to immerse them in various health organizations, such as homeless shelters and free clinics. This exposure begins in the first year (PGY1), and residents choose a community project, continuing their involvement throughout the residency. In the second year (PGY2), residents deepen their engagement with their selected organizations and develop corresponding research projects that address health equity. By the third year (PGY3), the focus shifts to community leadership and advocacy, equipping residents to be effective leaders in healthcare.
1The Bayhealth Family Medicine Residency Curriculum is notable for its flexibility, allowing substantial time for electives—approximately 20 weeks—giving residents the autonomy to explore and customize their training experiences. The program includes structured rotations that encompass essential family medicine components, such as Obstetrics, Community Research, Geriatrics, Emergency Medicine, and various specialties such as Cardiology and Dermatology. A night float system is established for specific rotations to ensure adequate rest for residents.
3Clinical Sites and Facilities
The residency operates within Bayhealth's two core hospital campuses: Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus, and Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus, enabling access to a vast array of clinical services. The Kent Campus is equipped with a level III trauma center, while the Sussex Campus provides specialized services such as interventional radiology and orthopedic rehabilitation. This infrastructure supports comprehensive training and diverse experiences essential for a family medicine physician.
2Located at 1074 S. State Street, the Bayhealth Family Medicine residency practice offers an inclusive health service environment focused on family care, including obstetrics and gynecology. The integration of a licensed professional counselor in the team promotes a holistic approach to patient management.
2Competitiveness and Application Requirements
The Bayhealth Family Medicine Residency Program is recognized as being inclusive to diverse medical graduates, welcoming international medical graduates (IMGs) and those completing their training from Doctor of Osteopathic (DO) programs. The program currently sponsors J-1 visas for international applicants. However, candidates are expected to have no more than one failed attempt in any medical school course or a segment of the USMLE or COMLEX exams, with minimum threshold scores set at USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK scores of 214 and COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2 CE scores of 400, respectively.
6Furthermore, applications must be submitted through the ERAS, and residents will be considered based on their alignment with the program's mission of community service and advocacy.
7Benefits and Support
Bayhealth provides a competitive salary structure for its residents, starting at $65,000 for PGY-1 and $73,000 for PGY-5. In addition to monetary compensation, residents enjoy a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, along with retirement savings plans and short-term disability coverage.
8Residents benefit from additional support, including a specified number of Paid Time Off (PTO) days, research funding for projects, and coverage for medical board examination fees. To maintain resident well-being, the program offers dedicated wellness activities and resources for mental and emotional health.
8Research and Quality Improvement
Research is an integral component of the Bayhealth Family Medicine Residency, facilitating a focus on quality improvement. Residents are allotted time within the curriculum to engage in research activities aimed at individual initiatives that resonate with their personal interests and with the needs of the surrounding community. This structured approach ensures that residents can effectively contribute to scholarly work while attending to their clinical responsibilities.
