It has evolved rapidly, successfully transitioning from a nascent program to one that prepares physicians through comprehensive training and mentorship. The program specializes in fostering long-term relationships between residents, patients, and the faculty, all set within a collaborative learning environment that emphasizes personal growth and academic rigor.
1The mission of the program is to recruit and retain outstanding physicians to serve the growing communities of Kent and Sussex County, Delaware. This commitment to community health aligns with Bayhealth's overarching mission to enhance the health of its community one life at a time. The program fosters a culture of inquiry and embraces the diversity of the community as a foundational aspect of medical training.
1Curriculum
The internal medicine residency curriculum incorporates a 3+1 schedule, allowing for a balanced approach to inpatient and outpatient experiences across three years of training. This innovative structure promotes continuity of care and relationship-building with patients.
8The following highlights characterize the curriculum:
- Inpatient rotations lasting two weeks.
- No 24-hour calls throughout the training.
- A comprehensive four-week orientation for PGY-1 residents.
- Options for early completion of subspecialty rotations to facilitate informed fellowship decisions.
- Longitudinal rotations in select subspecialties, including oncology and rheumatology.
Residents receive individualized opportunities during their training, which can include specific experiences tailored to career aspirations such as hospitalist roles or primary care.
8Core Components
Key rotations include:
- Hospitalist Service: PGY-1 (16 weeks), PGY-2 (10 weeks), PGY-3 (10 weeks)

Research Opportunities
The program at Bayhealth emphasizes research across all medical subspecialties. Residents are encouraged to engage in scholarly activities, which are critical in positioning them favorably for fellowship applications. Guidance is offered throughout the research process, ensuring residents have the resources they need to succeed.

The Bayhealth program welcomes applications from both U.S. medical graduates and international medical graduates (IMGs). To apply, candidates must utilize the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and meet the following criteria:

Visa sponsorship options, including H-1B and J-1 visas, are available for qualified applicants. The program strives to create an inclusive environment, encouraging diversity among its training cohort.
9Competitiveness
The residency program is regarded as competitive, yet it remains accessible for DO applicants and IMGs. This encourages a diverse pool of applicants and a broad recognition of varied medical educational backgrounds.
