Boston University Medical Center Program

The Boston University Nephrology Fellowship Training Program offers a comprehensive blend of clinical and research training designed to prepare fellows for various career paths, whether in clinical nephrology or academic medicine. Established over 60 years ago, this program has produced close to 200 alumni who have made significant contributions to nephrology on both national and international fronts. The fellowship includes three distinct tracks that provide tailored training options to meet the needs of each fellow.

Fellowship Tracks

Clinical Track (2 Years)

This two-year track focuses on general nephrology and kidney transplantation. In the first year, fellows gain fundamental clinical experience, while the second year emphasizes core educational experiences in outpatient hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplantation. Clinical track fellows may opt for enrichment pathways that include onco-nephrology, lupus nephritis, kidney transplantation, medical education, or clinical investigation depending on their career goals.

Clinical and Research Track (3 or More Years)

For those seeking a more extensive research experience, this track combines an initial year of clinical training with two or more years dedicated to clinical or basic research. During this phase, fellows are encouraged to engage in research that can culminate in obtaining a graduate degree in related fields, further enhancing their expertise in nephrology.

Research Track (Variable Length)

This innovative track is aimed at post-doctoral fellows possessing an MD, PhD, or equivalent qualifications, focusing on advanced research in kidney development, physiology, and molecular biology. The flexibility allows fellows to immerse themselves fully in research without immediate clinical responsibilities.

Clinical Training and Rotations

The program's clinical training is primarily conducted at three institutions: Boston Medical Center, Boston Veterans Affairs Health System, and DaVita Boston Dialysis Center. This multi-site framework ensures fellows acquire a broad range of experiences while treating an incredibly diverse patient population.

First-Year Fellowship Experience

During the first year, fellows spend their time across various services, which include consult services and clinics focused on outpatient dialysis and kidney transplantation. At Boston Medical Center, fellows have structured rotations that involve both inpatient and outpatient care, intensive exposure to kidney-related pathologies, and opportunities to perform essential procedures such as kidney biopsies and dialysis catheter placements.

Second-Year Fellowship Experience

The second-year training for clinical track fellows includes further specialization in areas like outpatient hemodialysis and transplantation, along with opportunities to engage in multiple specialty clinics and scholarly work specific to chosen enrichment pathways.

Educational Conferences and Didactics

The fellowship is enriched by a robust schedule of conferences and didactics which encompass clinical case discussions, journal clubs, and pathology reviews. These platforms foster a collaborative learning environment, connecting fellows with seasoned faculty and external experts. Special lectures and bootcamp series at the start of the program further enhance educational opportunities.

Research Opportunities

Research training occurs either through a NIH-supported T32 program for US citizens or initiatives encouraging fellows without permanent residency to seek external funding opportunities.

Application Process and Requirements

The program invites four clinical fellows annually, requiring applicants to hold an MD or equivalent degree and to have completed an internal medicine residency. International Medical Graduates must possess ECFMG certification. The program provides J1 and H1B visa sponsorships for qualifying candidates, thus supporting international access to this prestigious fellowship. Flexibility exists in the application process to allow applicants to decide on entering clinical or research tracks during their training.
