Psychiatry Residency Program Overview

The Psychiatry Residency Program at Carle Foundation Hospital is a distinguished component of Carle Health's residency training system, dedicated to enhancing the lives of residents, patients, and the wider community. The program is committed to fostering scholarship, innovation, and patient-centered care, providing an exemplary environment for developing future psychiatrists. ACGME accreditation was received in April 2016, with the first class beginning in July 2017. Residents benefit from training in a variety of settings, including a Level I trauma center, community hospitals, and a Veterans Affairs medical center, enhancing their learning through exposure to a diverse patient population.

Curriculum Structure

The residency curriculum is meticulously designed to equip residents with the knowledge and skills essential for independent psychiatric practice. Key training components include:

  • PGY-1: The first year includes rotations in inpatient psychiatry, neurology, internal medicine, palliative medicine, and pediatrics, alongside addiction and emergency medicine.
  • PGY-2: The second year focuses on community resident clinics and specialized rotations such as emergency psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, interventional psychiatry, and child and adolescent psychiatry.
  • PGY-3: Residents engage in diverse outpatient psychiatry services covering adult, pediatric, and geriatric populations with a longitudinal psychotherapy clinic.
  • PGY-4: The final year includes opportunities for leadership in the integrated behavioral health clinic and senior inpatient consults, as well as quality improvement and elective rotations.

Interdisciplinary collaboration is a hallmark of training, involving professionals from psychology, nursing, and other disciplines to enrich the learning experience.

Potential candidates must also comply with Illinois temporary licensure requirements, which include demonstrating psychiatry rotations and fulfilling continuing medical education credits.
