The General Surgery Residency program at Carle Foundation Hospital is designed to provide residents with the highest level of training to develop leaders in clinical and academic surgery. The goal is to offer an in-depth experience in the fundamentals of basic science as applied to clinical surgery, along with surgical skills for complex conditions. The program includes rotations at different hospitals, allowing exposure to varying practice settings from community hospitals to Level I Trauma Centers.

The program aims to graduate five chief residents in general surgery annually. Residents have the option to pursue additional training in research, surgical education, or health care delivery. The curriculum offers a well-rounded experience in various surgical specialties, preparing graduates for advanced training or future career paths.

Residents benefit from robust educational components such as didactic learning, surgical skill development, and simulation training. The program includes lectures, conferences, small group sessions, and one-on-one mentoring. Clinical Simulation Center training covers laparoscopic and clinical simulation, surgical skills practice, and team skill development in crisis scenarios.

The program supports up to five categorical general surgery residents and up to 12 non-designated preliminary track residents. Additionally, residents from other surgical specialties participate in the PGY-1 year. The program offers a balanced workload with vacation time and in-house on-call responsibilities.
