Loyola University Medical Center Program

The Loyola University Medical Center General Surgery Residency program offers a comprehensive training experience at an academic medical center with a focus on providing tertiary and quaternary care services to a diverse community. The program provides exposure to the latest technology, hands-on training, and involvement in various aspects of contemporary general surgery.

Residents have the opportunity to experience many surgical subspecialties through service rotations at different training sites closely located to each other. The program emphasizes outstanding clinical training in both academic and community general surgery. Residents benefit from exposure to both common and complex surgical diseases through various access points within Loyola Medicine.

The curriculum includes weekly educational conferences led by department faculty, skills training sessions, and a simulation center with advanced equipment for virtual training and robotic surgery experiences. The program encourages and supports research opportunities, offering protected time for basic science investigations, health services/outcomes research, and fellowships in surgical quality.

The General Surgery Residency at Loyola is renowned for its flexible training program that aims to meet the professional and personal goals of each trainee while prioritizing wellness and diversity. For application to the program, candidates must complete a comprehensive ERAS application including personal statement, research experience, publications, and medical school transcripts. Three to four letters of recommendation are required, with one from either the Department Chair, Program Director, or Vice Chair of Education. Passing Step 1 of the USMLE is necessary, and clinical experience in the U.S. is preferred for foreign medical graduates.

Interview invitations will be sent out in Fall 2023, with interviews scheduled on specific dates from October to December. The program does not have a minimum Step II USMLE score requirement for interview consideration. The program accepts J-1 visas and encourages ECFMG certification for foreign medical graduates before applying.
