The Southern Colorado Family Medicine Residency Program at Centura Health Corporation/St Mary-Corwin Hospital in Pueblo, CO, has been training resident physicians since 1975. The program offers robust full-scope family medicine physician training, preparing residents for various medical care areas in underserved outpatient clinics, inpatient adult medicine services, inpatient pediatric services, and OB services with deliveries and cesarean sections.
Application requirements for this program include submitting a completed ERAS application, including the Dean's Letter, Transcript, Personal Statement expressing a desire to train in family medicine, three Letters of Reference (including one from a Family Medicine Preceptor), and all USMLE/COMLEX scores. Passing USMLE/COMLEX 2 and CS/PE scores must be available in ERAS by February 1. Applicants should be committed to practicing in the Southeast CommonSpirit Health system service area and must be able to receive an unrestricted medical license by the state of Colorado and a DEA license at the beginning of the second year of residency. Priority is given to applicants who are 3 years or less post-medical school graduation.
The residency program offers a diverse training environment with opportunities for injections, obstetrics and gynecology procedures, skin biopsies, osteopathic manipulative medicine, acupuncture, EKG reading, and more. Residents have the chance to participate in various clinics, including a Migrant Clinic and a weekly outreach clinic to underserved populations. Over half of the graduates from SCFM stay in Colorado, with others pursuing fellowships or working in settings such as hospitalist roles, private practices, and full-scope family medicine.
Residents at SCFM have the opportunity to engage in tracks such as osteopathic manipulation therapy, surgical or nonsurgical OB, and colonoscopy. They also have the chance to spend their first year in Pueblo and second and third years in Alamosa, collaborating with Valley-Wide Health and San Luis Valley Hospital.
