Overview of UCHealth Parkview Internal Medicine Residency Program

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at UCHealth Parkview Medical Center, located in Pueblo, Colorado, is an ACGME-accredited program that began in 2012. It aims to train residents in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of patients, emphasizing the principles of osteopathic practice, professionalism, and medical knowledge. The mission of the program is to produce well-rounded general internists who are proficient in clinical medicine and showcase empathy towards patients.

The program offers ten categorical residency positions for a three-year training track, with opportunities to explore interests in primary care, hospital-based, and advanced general internal medicine. The curriculum is meticulously designed to ensure a combination of outpatient and inpatient experiences.

Curriculum Structure

The curriculum comprises a comprehensive 13-block schedule that integrates both inpatient and outpatient training. Residents undergo various rotations that include crucial procedures such as airway management, lumbar puncture (LP), paracentesis, and point-of-care ultrasound. Additionally, residents are immersed in a structured didactic system focusing on core internal medicine concepts as well as elective opportunities in subspecialties.

Specialty rotations include intensive care, neurology, anesthesia, emergency medicine, and other electives. The program prioritizes hands-on learning opportunities and aims to prepare residents for future board examinations. A considerable focus is placed on quality improvement initiatives and clinical research, allowing residents to present findings at local, regional, and national conferences.

Resident Life and Wellness

Recognizing the importance of well-being, the program nurtures a supportive environment where residents can engage in various wellness activities. Residents are encouraged to explore the rich outdoor offerings in Pueblo, which features recreational venues such as Lake Pueblo Reservoir and the Royal Gorge Bridge. To combat physician burnout and promote career longevity, the wellness program was established to provide residents with resources and support systems to thrive personally and professionally.

Application Requirements

Applicants interested in the program must utilize the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) system to submit their materials. A completed application includes:

• Official school transcript
• Curriculum vitae (generated by ERAS)
• Personal statement
• Scores from Step I and Step II of the USMLE, or Level I and Level II CE of the COMLEX
• Dean’s letter of recommendation
• Three letters of recommendation, including one from the Chair of the Medicine Department and another preferably from an internal medicine faculty member.

International Medical Graduates (IMG) must meet additional criteria, including a preference for J-1 visa sponsorship through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). The program does not sponsor visas for house staff and requires foreign applicants to possess extensive U.S. clinical experience, preferably with inpatient experience.

Competitiveness and Visa Support

The program is competitive and seeks candidates who demonstrate strong academic backgrounds, relevant experiences, and robust letters of recommendation. Specifically, applicants must have passed USMLE Step I and Step II on the first attempt. The program is welcoming to both DO and international medical graduates, provided they meet the established application and clinical experience prerequisites.

The program sponsors J-1 visas for IMG applicants, emphasizing the essential requirement of ECFMG certification prior to the application.

Rotations and Clinical Exposure

The residency experience is structured around a blend of major clinical rotations across various departments, ensuring residents gain comprehensive exposure to the vast scope of internal medicine. Each intern takes on a patient panel for personal care in outpatient clinics, with a weekly commitment that enhances their clinical acumen and patient management abilities. Scholarship and Research Opportunities

Scholarship is an integral part of the residency program, with all residents required to participate in a quality improvement (QI) project and a research-based presentation before graduation.
