1485140C0The Eisenhower Health Internal Medicine Residency Program offers a comprehensive educational experience aimed at training residents to become exceptional internists capable of managing a diverse patient population in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Established in 2011, the program has been designed to align with the Core Competencies set forth by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) by providing a broad base of clinical training and promoting self-directed continuous learning throughout residency.
Curriculum and Training Structure
The curriculum consists of a mix of didactic education and hands-on clinical experiences, which can be categorized into various components including Morning Report, Noon Lectures, Grand Rounds, Journal Clubs, and sessions dedicated to career preparation and practice management.
Every resident engages in a variety of rotations that cover critical areas such as General Internal Medicine (inpatient wards), Emergency Medicine, ICU, and specialties within Internal Medicine including Neurology, Geriatrics, Palliative Care, and more. The program emphasizes a well-rounded experience, with opportunities for elective rotations in fields like Allergy and Immunology, Psychiatry, and Sports Medicine among others. Additionally, residents participate in a longitudinal Research & Quality Improvement (QI) curriculum, enhancing their research skills and foundational scholarly activity.
Unique Aspects of the Program
A defining feature of the program is its 'x+y' schedule, which includes one week dedicated to a Continuity Clinic followed by four weeks of inpatient or specialty rotations. This structure promotes uninterrupted collaboration between inpatient and outpatient faculty and allows residents to manage their own patient panel in the Internal Medicine Residency Clinic.
Residents are exposed to a diverse patient demographic, inclusive of quality care settings such as the Volunteers in Medicine clinic, which serving the uninsured population.
Evaluation and Competencies
Residents are continuously evaluated through a combination of rotation performance, faculty assessments, and participation in various educational sessions, ensuring a depth of understanding and competency in clinical practices. Expected competencies revolve around effective communication with patients, understanding social determinants of health, respect and compassion in patient interaction, and a dedication to lifelong learning within the medical field.
Research Opportunities
The program encourages residents to engage in research, evidenced by their participation in local and national conferences, showcasing posters and presenting podium talks based on their scholarly articles throughout their time in the program.
Application Requirements
Eisenhower Health’s Internal Medicine Residency Program participates in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) and accepts applications exclusively through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Basic requirements include valid USMLE Step 1 scores, an ECFMG certificate prior to residency commencement, and graduation from medical school within the past five years. The program does not accept COMLEX scores and only evaluates USMLE metrics.
For international medical graduates (IMGs), visa sponsorship is limited and only available at the fellowship level, leaving residents to seek alternative routes for residency training visas. The competitive nature of the program encourages a strong applicant pool, reflective of its desired standard to maintain a high educational curriculum and professional training environment.
Resident Support and Environment
The program fosters an open and supportive atmosphere for residents, emphasizing academic excellence while maintaining a healthy balance between personal and professional lives. The location in beautiful Rancho Mirage, California, further enhances the experience of wellness and satisfaction. This friendly, inclusive, and empowering culture reflects the strong camaraderie among the residents and faculty, contributing to a holistically enriching training environment.
With these elements, the Eisenhower Health Internal Medicine Residency program stands out as a robust choice for aspiring internists seeking a fulfilling educational experience in Southern California.
