Inpatient responsibilities involve general nephrology consults, the inpatient dialysis service, and the transplant service. This extensive exposure ensures that fellows become proficient in all aspects of nephrology, including transplantation and dialysis therapies.

As fellows progress to their second year, there is a stronger focus on research, outpatient specialty clinics, and home dialysis. Fellows are expected to take a more active role in their outpatient dialysis clinic and partake in the Facility Quality Improvement program, enhancing their clinical skills and management capabilities. An important component of the fellowship includes participation in simulation workshops that cover essential procedures, allowing fellows to hone their practical skills in a controlled environment.

A robust didactic schedule complements clinical training. Each day of the week is dedicated to diverse educational activities, including lectures on various nephrology topics, case presentations, simulation workshops, and journal clubs. In addition, fellows engage in external workshops and conferences, such as the Annual Mid-Atlantic First Year Renal Fellows’ Symposium and the Fundamentals of Critical Care Training, providing broader exposure to the field and opportunities for professional networking.

Research is a key pillar of the fellowship, supported by the Geisinger Kidney Health Research Institute (KHRI). The institute provides dedicated mentorship from experienced clinical investigators and access to resources essential for conducting original research. Visa Sponsorship and Application Requirements

The program sponsors H-1B visas for foreign medical graduates, making it an accessible opportunity for international applicants. Exceptional foreign medical graduates who have not completed an ACGME-approved internal medicine program may be considered on a case-by-case basis. The selection process for the fellowship takes into account various criteria, including USMLE/COMLEX scores, performance in medical school and residency, and letters of recommendation.
