The HCA Healthcare Sunrise Health GME Consortium Emergency Medicine Residency Program is situated in Las Vegas, Nevada. It offers a comprehensive training environment that accommodates a broad spectrum of emergency cases through two high-volume, high-acuity training sites, MountainView Hospital and Sunrise Hospital. This program is designed to prepare residents for proficiency in emergency medicine, with an annual patient volume exceeding 240,000 visits, thus positioning it among the busiest emergency medicine programs in the nation.

1

Program Overview

The program spans diverse educational and clinical experiences, allowing residents to rotate between MountainView Hospital— a 425-bed acute care facility— and Sunrise Hospital— a 762-bed Level II Trauma center. The structured rotations, paired with the robust patient care environment, ensure that residents are exposed to a wide variety of medical cases, which is crucial for developing a well-rounded clinical skill set. Additionally, the focus on individualized learning opportunities promotes the development of future physician leaders.

1

Curriculum Structure

The residency adopts the Modular Active Learning Curriculum for Emergency Medicine (MALCEM), which consists of weekly literature-based modules focusing on core emergency medicine topics. Each module involves preparatory reading, followed by a group learning discussion moderated by faculty. Post-discussion, residents participate in high-fidelity simulations that allow them to apply the skills learned in a practical environment. This innovative method enhances resident engagement and solidifies learning through experiential application.

1

Educational Resources

The program is enriched by a dedicated Graduate Medical Education floor equipped with a simulation lab, a resident lounge, plentiful learning labs, and conference facilities. These resources foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment, enabling residents to receive quality training and mentorship during their educational journey.

1

Rotations and Clinical Experience

The rotation schedule consists of thirteen four-week blocks covering various specialties including Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, and critical care areas, such as Medical ICU and Pediatric ICU. This diverse schedule is designed to challenge residents and ensure they gain comprehensive clinical exposure necessary for future practice.

1

Specialty Rotations

In addition to foundational emergency medicine training, residents also engage in rotations across multiple specialties, including Anesthesiology, Cardiology, OB/GYN, Orthopedics, and Ultrasound. This exposure ensures that residents not only hone their emergency medicine skills but also develop an understanding of the interdisciplinary approach to patient care.

1

Application Requirements

The application process is designed to attract both allopathic and osteopathic candidates from the United States and Canada. Candidates must successfully complete the USMLE Step 1 and/or COMLEX Level 1 before an interview can be considered. Additionally, applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation, including two or more Standardized Letters of Evaluation (SLOEs), a personal statement, CV, transcripts, a dean's letter, and a photograph. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must meet additional criteria, such as certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

1

Competitiveness and Inclusivity

The program is competitive and welcomes applications from both US citizens and international medical graduates. Notably, the program has established a supportive environment for applicants from diverse backgrounds, thereby enhancing its inclusivity in terms of specialty training.

1

Visa Support

The program provides visa support for qualified international medical graduates, thus allowing them to apply for a residency position under the appropriate visa status. Specifically, the program is capable of sponsoring J-1 visas for IMGs, which is essential for facilitating their participation in the residency program.

1

Professional Development

The program emphasizes resident wellness, diversity, and leadership, ensuring a holistic approach to resident education. Opportunities for mentorship and leadership development are embedded within the curriculum, allowing residents to thrive both professionally and personally throughout their training.
