Overview

The JFK Medical Center's Pain Medicine Fellowship Program offers a comprehensive one-year ACGME accredited fellowship in Pain Medicine, emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach. This fellowship is housed within the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, aiming to cultivate future leaders in the field of pain management. The program's faculty comprises board-certified physicians from multiple specialties, including Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Neurology, Anesthesiology, Psychiatry, and Pain Psychology. This diverse expertise ensures a well-rounded training experience for fellows with a strong foundation in both the clinical and research domains of pain medicine.

The curriculum is structured around core competencies vital to pain management, which include Interventional Pain Management, both Acute and Chronic Pain Management, General Musculoskeletal Care, Pain Pharmacology, Addiction Medicine, Cancer Pain, Hospice/Palliative Care, Pain Psychology, and Post-Operative Pain Care. Throughout the fellowship, fellows engage in clinical research and quality improvement projects, enhancing their practical skills and understanding of the clinical context. This multidisciplinary educational environment helps fellows acquire the essential knowledge and experience needed to address complex pain scenarios effectively 1.

Clinical Rotations and Training Sites

The fellowship includes hands-on clinical training across several facilities: JFK University Medical Center, JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, JFK Mediplex Surgical Center, and Roosevelt Care Center, all located in Edison, NJ. Additionally, fellows satisfy their Intubation and IV Sedation requirements at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. These locations are strategically positioned within the NY/NJ metropolitan area, offering fellows diverse patient populations and treatment scenarios.

Fellowship Objectives

Throughout the fellowship year, trainees will:

  • Conduct thorough assessments of patients experiencing acute and chronic pain.
  • Create and implement treatment plans based on clinical and scientific data in conjunction with patient preferences.
  • Communicate diagnoses and treatment options effectively in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Perform essential medical procedures including spinal interventions, joint injections, and the placement of spinal cord stimulators.
  • Gain proficiency in chronic opioid management and understanding pharmacologic agents relevant to pain treatment.
  • Engage with psychiatric and psychological methods of pain management.
  • Participate in daily inpatient consultation rounds and weekly educational lectures, integrating didactic learning with clinical practice.

This comprehensive framework ensures that fellows develop the skills necessary to critically appraise pain management literature and participate actively in research endeavors 2.

Application Process and Requirements

The program requires applicants to have completed an ACGME accredited residency, typically in disciplines like Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Anesthesiology, Psychiatry, or Neurology.
