Program Overview

The Psychiatry Residency Program at Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) is designed to train psychiatrists ready to serve rural and underserved communities in Western North Carolina. The program was established to meet the critical shortage of mental health professionals in this region, where all 16 counties are designated as mental health professional shortage areas. The mission focuses on developing skilled psychiatrists adept in providing comprehensive care in various settings, particularly in integrated primary care.

Curriculum and Rotations

The program spans four years, with each year structured to build on the knowledge and competencies gained in the previous year.

PGY1

During the first year, residents engage in training across two inpatient psychiatric facilities: the Sweeten Creek Mental Health and Wellness Center and the Charles George VA Medical Center. Additionally, residents fulfill primary care requirements through rotations in internal and family medicine, as well as neurology, to gain foundational skills necessary for psychiatric practice.

PGY2

The second year emphasizes outpatient experiences, exposing residents to various settings including a treatment-resistant clinic offering Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), a child safety/forensic pediatrics unit, and an IDD clinic. Residents also engage in continuity clinics for children and adults, alongside psychotherapy.

PGY3

In the third year, residents return to inpatient care with additional specialized rotations, such as child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatrics, and substance use disorder treatment. Activities also include participation in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and a general adult psychiatry unit.

PGY4

The final year offers intensive outpatient rotations, including a forensic psychiatry rotation and collaborative care consultations with rural primary care providers. Residents have ample opportunities to pursue electives, culminating their personalized training experience.

Specific Application Requirements

Eligibility criteria include graduation from a recognized medical school, passing all USMLE/COMLEX exams within a set number of attempts, and the ability to work in the U.S. Applicants must have ECFMG certification if they are IMG applicants. MAHEC does not sponsor H1B visas, only J-1 visas through ECFMG, for international applicants requiring visa sponsorship.
