Mountain Area Health Education Center (Asheville) Program

The Psychiatry residency program at Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) in Asheville, North Carolina, aims to train excellent psychiatrists to serve rural and underserved populations in the region. The program offers a variety of inpatient and outpatient psychiatry settings, including rotations at hospitals such as Pardee Hospital, Mission Hospital, Broughton State Hospital, and the VA Medical Center. Residents have the opportunity to engage in various specialized rotations, such as child and adolescent, geriatrics, consultation/liaison with electroconvulsive therapy, substance use disorder, and more.

The program emphasizes a comprehensive curriculum that includes protected time for didactics, journal club, case conferences, resident presentations, and research activities. Residents also have elective opportunities to tailor their experience to areas of interest, such as forensics, integrated care consultations, rural primary care collaborations, and more. Additionally, the program supports a child/adolescent fellowship fast-track option after the third year of residency.

To apply to the MAHEC Psychiatry residency program, interested applicants should submit a complete ERAS application, including a CV, personal statement, three letters of recommendation (at least one from a psychiatrist), medical school transcripts, USMLE/COMLEX scores (Step 1 required, Step 2 preferred), and other required documentation. Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria, including US medical school graduation or ECFMG certification for international medical graduates, passing USMLE/COMLEX exams within three attempts, NC resident training license eligibility, and authorization to work in the US.

While MAHEC does not sponsor visas, international medical graduates must possess a current/valid visa option or other status governed by US Immigration Regulations to participate in the program. The North Carolina Medical Board requires additional certifications and training for physicians who are graduates of foreign medical schools to be eligible for full licensure in the state.
