Mountain Area Health Education Center (Asheville) Program

The Mountain Area Health Education Center (Asheville) Program is a community-focused, not-for-profit Family Medicine training program located in scenic Asheville, NC. The program primarily serves urban and rural underserved populations in the Western NC region. They became an FQHC in June 2022, enhancing their ability to offer high-quality care to patients.

The program's curriculum aims to develop residents into highly skilled and compassionate physicians through collaborative, team-based care, quality education, innovative practice, and evidence-informed decision making. They train family physicians to practice full-spectrum and community-informed Family Medicine anywhere, from rural to urban settings. Residents are provided comprehensive training in areas such as global and community-based care, maternity care/women's health, behavioral medicine, geriatrics, sports medicine, rural medicine, and more.

The program encourages applicants to apply and welcomes Acting Internships. They also offer student rotations in various specialties for both in-state and out-of-state students interested in their residency programs. MAHEC is committed to creating an inclusive and equitable environment by actively recruiting individuals from underrepresented minorities. They emphasize diversity and value the contributions of individuals from different backgrounds.

The program's application requirements include being a graduate of a medical school in the US or Canada accredited by the LCME or AOA, passing USMLE Steps 1 and 2 or COMLEX 1 and 2 within three attempts, and being eligible for a NC resident training license. International medical graduates must hold a valid ECFMG certificate and visa status, as they do not sponsor visas. Applicants should complete a full ERAS application, including their CV, personal statement, letters of recommendation, transcripts, exam scores, and more.

MAHEC residents train at Mission Hospital, a regional referral center with state-of-the-art facilities. The curriculum includes unique components such as the Lifestyle Medicine Residency Curriculum, focusing on six key areas of health improvement. Residents participate in various rotations and have opportunities for research, rural health experience, and elective time. The program provides a variety of learning experiences to help residents develop into well-rounded family physicians.
