Ohio State University Hospital Program

The Ohio State University Hospital Radiation Oncology Residency Program offers a comprehensive training experience in radiation therapy modalities. Residents have the opportunity to learn various technical skills in an ideal setting. The program provides exposure to a wide range of treatments, including gamma knife stereotactic radiosurgery, proton radiation therapy, gynecologic and genitourinary brachytherapy, stereotactic body radiation therapy, and more. The program is housed within the $1.1 billion Comprehensive Cancer Center, enhancing the learning environment.

The academic component of the program includes preparatory courses in Clinical Radiation Oncology, Radiation Physics, and Radiation Biology. Residents participate in various educational activities such as chart rounds, cancer center grand rounds, journal clubs, case conferences, and morbidity and mortality conferences. The program aims to develop clinically skilled and compassionate radiation oncologists with strong interests in leadership and research.

The residents participate in clinical rotations working with subspecialty-trained radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiation biologists, and other healthcare professionals. Didactic lectures are held regularly, covering topics organized by disease site. Residents have dedicated research time and electives in their third year of residency. The program also prepares residents for board examinations through mock oral boards, board-preparation software, and other educational resources.

The four-year program includes 36 months of clinical training and 12 months of research. The residency program accepts 2 or 3 residents per year through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Application requirements include a curriculum vitae, medical school performance evaluation, transcripts, letters of recommendation, USMLE Step I scores (Step II optional), and a personal statement.

The Ohio State University Hospital Radiation Oncology Residency Program emphasizes a mentor-apprentice model in the clinic, offers a variety of didactic courses, and encourages residents to engage in multidisciplinary tumor boards and other educational activities. Residents also have the opportunity to participate in regional, national, and international conferences.
