Mission and Vision
The mission is to provide excellent patient care and service, ensuring that fellows develop proficiency in both pulmonary and critical care while demonstrating empathy toward patients. The vision is focused on achieving recognition as a leading fellowship program through consistent improvement and quality educational standards.

Fellowship Overview

Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in an array of clinical experiences including General Pulmonology, Critical Care, Interventional Pulmonology, Pulmonary Hypertension, and Sleep Medicine. The rotation curriculum is structured as follows:

  • MICU: 6 Blocks
  • CVICU: 3 - 4 Blocks
  • NTICU: 3 - 4 Blocks
  • Inpatient Pulmonary: 9 - 10 Blocks
  • Outpatient Pulmonary/Sleep Clinic: 4 Blocks
  • Research/Elective: 2 - 4 Blocks

Call Structure

The call schedule is designed to balance the demands on fellows:

  • Daytime call is shared among 3 - 4 fellows.
  • A night float system is in place with rotations spanning 2-week spans over 4 months.
  • Weekend call sharing occurs between daytime fellows and night float fellows, with call frequency ranging from 12 to 18 per year depending on the fellow's year of training.

Research and Publication Opportunities

A significant component of the fellowship includes clinical research and the encouragement to prepare an annual scientific paper. Fellows are expected to engage in research projects that could lead to publication or presentation at national conferences. The program supports air travel and accommodation expenses for fellows presenting at such events. Collaborations with basic science or translational research departments at Colorado State University-Pueblo may provide additional research opportunities.

Educational Commitments

Fellows will maintain active memberships in leading professional organizations such as the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. The program encourages attendance at an annual meeting of these societies, aiming to increase fellows' exposure and networking opportunities within the field.

Additionally, faculty will provide Pulmonary and Critical Care Board Review Course materials to prepare fellows for board certification.

Faculty Composition

The fellowship is supported by a diverse faculty with board certifications in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care, and other subspecialties. Faculty members are well-versed in various areas, making them valuable educators and resources throughout the training period. Their combined expertise strengthens the educational environment provided to fellows.

Visa Sponsorship

The fellowship program supports J-1 visa sponsorship on a case-by-case basis, focusing on applicants who meet specific criteria. This provides opportunities for both DO and MD graduates, making the program accessible to a diverse pool of candidates.

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The UCHealth Parkview Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellowship is considered to be competitive, welcoming applications from both U.S. graduates and international medical graduates (IMGs). Applicants should possess a thorough understanding of pulmonary anatomy and physiology, as well as clinical assessment skills.

All applications must be submitted through ERAS, and additional details regarding specific qualifications or maximum failed STEP exams may be required as part of the application process.

The fellowship endeavors to train the next generation of leaders in pulmonary and critical care medicine, equipping them with comprehensive clinical and academic skills necessary to thrive in a complex healthcare environment.
