Parkview Medical Center Program

The UCHealth Parkview Gastroenterology Fellowship Program is designed to provide comprehensive training in gastroenterology, with a mission to deliver exceptional patient care in Southeastern Colorado. The fellowship aims to train well-rounded specialists who can function independently and serve as valuable resources within their communities.

Fellowship Overview

The fellowship spans a minimum of 36 months and consists of intensive clinical training complemented by an extensive didactic curriculum. Fellows will engage actively in both learning and teaching roles. Though clinical research introductions are part of the program, it is not primarily a research-focused fellowship. Candidates looking to pursue extensive research careers are advised to choose other specialized programs better aligned with such goals.

Clinical Experience

The training includes mandatory clinical exposure over the full fellowship term, with particular emphasis on the first two years. Year one fellows participate in a half-day continuity clinic twice a week, transitioning to once a week in years two and three based on their assigned clinics. The fellowship requires a diverse rotation with at least five months of hepatology, including significant exposure in areas such as inflammatory bowel disease, motility, and advanced endoscopy.

Requirements for Fellowship Applicants

Applicants must have completed a residency in Internal Medicine and demonstrate broad competence across its various subspecialties. The program is open to both MD and DO candidates, and it is critical that applicants maintain a balanced exposure to Internal Medicine during residency. A well-rounded internist is deemed essential for effective specialization in gastroenterology.

Research Opportunities

While the fellowship is not research-centric, fellows are encouraged to engage in research projects, with opportunities to collaborate with basic science departments at CSU-Pueblo. Candidates are also motivated to submit at least one scientific paper suitable for publication during their training, which may take various forms, including case reports and independent research projects. The fellowship supports participation in national conferences pertaining to gastroenterology, covering costs for presentations and travel.

Unique Aspects of the Program

Fellows participate in interdisciplinary learning with rotations in related fields, including radiology, surgery, and pathology, enhancing their understanding of gastroenterology's implications on broader health issues. The program emphasizes the importance of fellow mentorship, allowing senior fellows to guide junior house-staff.
