NeuroradiologyACGME Code:
4231621008The neuroradiology fellowship at Rush University Medical Center is an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-approved program that provides comprehensive clinical training over one or two years. This program offers four first-year and two second-year fellowship positions, aiming to develop skills in various imaging modalities and invasive procedures.
Fellows will gain proficiency in multiple imaging techniques, such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and radiography. Moreover, the program emphasizes advanced imaging modalities, including functional MRI, perfusion imaging, MR spectroscopy, and fetal MR imaging. Invasive procedures, such as myelography, pain-therapeutic injections, and image-guided biopsies concerning spine and head and neck pathology, are also integral components of the training.
Clinical Environment
The fellowship is situated in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, where the neuroradiology section performs between 55,000 to 60,000 neuroimaging studies annually. The program is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including two 3T MRIs, three 1.5T MRIs, and eight multidetector CT scanners, among which three are dual-energy scanners. Additionally, a satellite hospital operates a 1.5T MRI and two MDCT scanners, broadening the fellows' training environment.
Training and Mentorship
Fellows actively participate in all aspects of patient care, encompassing pre-procedure evaluations and post-procedure care. The educational experience includes teaching conferences, didactic lectures, and interdisciplinary meetings, allowing for a rich learning atmosphere. Fellows are closely mentored by a team of seven board-certified neuroradiologists, many of whom hold memberships in the American Society of Neuroradiology and are board-certified in diagnostic radiology.
Application Process
Prospective applicants must submit the RUSH Fellowship Application Form, a minimum of three letters of recommendation from professional sources (preferably from current mentors), and a letter of recommendation from the director of their most recent training program. Applicants must also possess a valid Illinois medical license and have completed a residency in diagnostic radiology, obtaining board certification or eligibility. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are required to have completed a radiology residency in their country of origin and must hold valid certification from their country's radiology board. Additionally, IMGs need to be eligible for licensure in Illinois and hold valid ECFMG certification, which necessitates passing the USMLE steps 1, 2, and 3.
Visa Support
For international candidates, the program provides sponsorship for the J-1 visa type, as it is a common visa for foreign medical graduates pursuing clinical training in the United States. This facilitates participation in the fellowship for qualified IMGs.
Program Competitiveness
The neuroradiology fellowship program is recognized for its high level of competitiveness. Candidates should demonstrate strong academic performance and clinical skills to enhance their application. The program welcomes applicants from both US graduates and international medical graduates, ensuring a diverse cohort of fellows.
